Free Utility Audits the Use of Plug-and-Play Storage Devices Connected to Corporate Networks

SmartLine Inc today released DeviceLock Plug-and-Play Auditor, a non-intrusive clientless utility for system and IT security administrators that want to know how many users are uploading and downloading data to personal, portable storage devices. This software solution generates a report detailing the USB, FireWire and PCMCIA devices currently connected to computers in the network and those that were connected. Its multithreaded engine ensures fast, unobtrusive auditing of all activity on any computers in the network. DeviceLock Plug and Play Auditor can be downloaded for free from www.devicelock.com.

USB and FireWire ports are standard components on almost all computers today, while laptops have another port - PCMCIA. The abundance of devices of different types and functions - from removable storage, PDAs, digital cameras to WiFi and Bluetooth adaptors - can all be simply connected via these Plug-and-Play ports. Capacity and transfer speed has rapidly improved over the last few years; today a device with 200GB of storage is not uncommon or expensive. The technology has advanced and been adopted by users so fast, in fact, many corporate IT groups have not yet set policy regarding their use. This despite the fact that such devices can turn a local computer into an unprotected gateway to the entire network, putting intellectual property and corporate records at risk for theft or destruction. DeviceLock Plug-and-Play is offered to help security teams take a measure of current device use, so that they can better plan related policy and technology enforcement measures.

DeviceLock PnP Auditor stores, compares and filters the data it receives from all the computers you set for auditing. Its Multi Document Interface (MDI) structure, allows you to keep each task in its own window. You can make "snapshots" of systems for future comparison and notation of changes. You also have the choice of displaying audit results in the form of a tree or as a plain list. Results can be exported to Microsoft Excel for thorough analysis and review.

DeviceLock PnP Auditor runs on Windows 2000 and later systems and doesn't install any components on remote computers. It allows you to select computers for auditing directly from the Microsoft Network tree or from any LDAP tree (e.g. MS Active Directory, Novell eDirectory, Open LDAP, etc.). You can also load a list of computers or IP addresses from an external file.

SmartLine's many customers include Major Technology stakeholders, some of the largest US and international banks, telecommunications conglomerates, government networks and educational institutions.
